No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
